Shift Light Pro is released for free

At some point in the last two years, Google sent me an email that the Shift Light Pro plug-in for Torque was removed from the Play Store because it violated a policy. I was given an email address to start an appeal.

So, I emailed and tried to figure out what this was all about. I asked questions that any reasonable person would ask.

All I got back was a reply that a policy was violated, they can’t tell me what policy and what the exact violation is. Something about impersonation.

Curiously enough, the free version of the plug-in was not removed.

So much for the advanced ML/AI that is apparently responsible for this arbitrary and capricious actions.

Anyway, the plug-in wasn’t generating that much revenue (something like $15/month?); I do think a number of people use and like it (even with its 8-bit 80s graphics 😁). So, after some time migrating to Android Studio (Eclipse was used originally), I’m making the .apk freely available. You no longer need to use those shady ‘mirror’ sites 🙂

You must manually enable all the permissions that the plug-in asks for. Without them a number of features won’t work. You can do that by going to Settings, Apps, Shift Light Pro, Permissions.

Here is the explanation for each permission requested:
1. Camera – so the video of your driving can be recorded.

2. Location – so the map of your driving can be created and recorded

3. Microphone – so the video will have audio 🙂

4. Phone – so a phone call can be rejected while the app is in use (preferences can toggle this feature)

5. Storage – so the preferences and recordings can be stored.

Feel free to donate via Venmo @alex-bakaev if you feel like it.

Enjoy!
